2. Why You Should Join A Pro Now! (ASCAP or BMI)
Many people in the music industry have different views about when a
songwriter should join a Performing Rights Organization (Pro) such as
ASCAP or BMI. There are many music publishers and music supervisors
that think you should join as soon as possible. If you are making your
songwriting a career (or would like it to be) then you should not wait.
Do some research so you know which Pro is best for you and your
songwriting career.
If a music supervisor is looking to license a song for a TV series, they
need to be able to license the song quickly. In some cases just a few days.
They don't have time to wait for the songwriter to go through the process
of joining a Pro. They need to finalize the licensing process, prepare the
cue sheet and send it to the Pro. The Pro uses the cue sheet to determine
how much performance royalties to pay the songwriter, publisher or anyone
else tied to the song. Music supervisors wanting to license songs for a
feature length film may have more time however, they still don't want to wait.
They need to know if they can license your song so it can be edited into the
film. If for some reason the songwriter or the Pro have issues that need time
to get ironed out, the music supervisor does not have the time or patience to
wait. They are going to move on and license a song that is ready.
If you've been told that there is no reason to join now or you can't join until
your song is published, you've been misinformed. You can join right now.
Call ASCAP or BMI and speak with a Member Service representative.

4. Q & A - Questions From Our Subscribers
Q: Can I send a rough demo or do you only accept studio demos?
A: You can send a rough demo, however the vocals and music must be
extremely clear with minimal to no background noise. Keep in mind that
we will most likely will not pitch a song unless it is a undeniable
smash hit. If it is, we will pay to get a studio demo recorded.
~~~~~~~~~
Q: Do you accept MP3's via e-mail or download from my web site?
A: Yes we do. We have an e-mail size limit of 1 MB. You would have to lower
the bit rate of your MP3 to get it small enough to be received. We are working
on an upload page on our site and will send out a notice when it is available.
In the meantime, if you let us know where we can download your song, we'll
download it and take a listen. If we like it, we will ask that you send the song
on CD.
~~~~~~~~~
Q: Who do you get your tips sheets from?
A: We use tip sheets from "Pitch This Music", "The Pitch List" from SongCasting &
"The Song Seekers International Tip Sheet". We get a variety of pitch opportunities
for recording artists from these tips sheets. We also use the Film Music Network for
music to license for Film & TV.
